Seven

For a composition that was frankly seditious and meant risking death for its authors, the first White Rose leaflet began sedately, almost pedantically: “Nothing is more unworthy of a cultured people than to allow itself, without resistance, to be ‘governed’ by an irresponsible ruling clique motivated by the darkest instincts.”

The leaflet, neatly typed double-space, went on for some eight hundred words in the vein of an analytical magazine article or a polemical essay rather than in the tempo of a flaming summons to the barricades. There were obligatory citations from classical German literature, including a long quotation from Schiller’s “The Legislation of Lycurgus”, in which the inhuman rigidity of the Spartan state was shown to be the cause of its downfall. The reader was left to draw his own parallel.

Though the language was often stilted and didactic, the intensity that inspired the leaflet in the first place showed through repeatedly in unequivocal phrases and paragraphs:

Who can imagine the extent of the shame that will engulf us and our children once the scales fall from our eyes and crimes monstrous beyond all measure are revealed?
